New OAK-DFW Flights on
Spirit Airlines in Spring 2013
|
|
Improved Transcon and
International Connections
|
Within a year of
launching service at Oakland
International Airport (OAK), Spirit
Airlines announced plans to
continue growth here. Spirit will begin daily nonstop service to
Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) in spring 2013.
The Spirit flights, on
modern Airbus A320 aircraft to begin April 25, are conveniently
timed, allowing for late-night travel and arrival in time for the
next business day or connecting flights from DFW. OAK departures
are at 12:30 a.m., arriving DFW at 6:00 a.m. Flights depart from
DFW at 11:15 p.m., and arrive to OAK at 12:45 a.m., the next day.
"It is great news
for travelers to and from the San Francisco Bay Area that there
will be a truly low-fare option for nonstop flights to Dallas/Fort
Worth," said Deborah Ale Flint, Director of Aviation for the
Port of Oakland, which owns and operates OAK. "It is even
better news for OAK in that the new nonstop flights bring service
to this large unserved market, with convenient connections to
Spirit's system beyond DFW."
Considered by many to be
the most profitable airline in the US, Spirit began serving OAK
with daily nonstops to Las Vegas in August 2011. Spirit offers its
unique brand of low fares, high value, and ala carte pricing in the
San Francisco Bay area exclusively at OAK.

OAK-Europe Flights in
Demand this Summer
We've
Got Your Ticket To Amsterdam And Portugal
|
|
ArkeFly's
inaugural OAK-AMS flight received a water arch bon voyage in June.
|
The terminals are
bustling with activity this summer as OAK travelers arrive from and
depart to a record high 41 cities, including two in Europe. In
Terminal 1, boasting a freshly renovated international arrivals
area, ArkeFly and SATA are contributing to the
season’s excitement.
Through the OAK gateway,
over 500 inbound international passengers arrive on ArkeFly's twice-weekly
flights from Amsterdam to the Bay Area each week. The average
visitor stays up to nine nights, with an overall estimated $5
million in economic impact to area tourism during the 18 weeks of
scheduled service.
Bay Area travelers are
enjoying their departure from OAK to Amsterdam, as the largest city
in the Netherlands is an exciting and desirable destination in
itself, and is a great connecting point to many other European
cities. ArkeFly uses B767-300ER aircraft which seat 283 passengers
in three classes.
SATA's weekly nonstop
service between OAK and the beautiful Azores islands in Portugal
have resumed for the summer season through Sept. 30. The Sunday
flights arrive OAK at 2:40 p.m. and depart at 4:15 p.m. on Airbus
310 aircraft that seat 222 passengers.
The Azores are a
hiker's, walker's, or cyclist's paradise, waiting to be explored.
Ribbons of road twist along black rock sea cliffs with stunning
views of the green-blue ocean. The islands are dotted with tiny
towns with local cafés where the menu is whatever the fishing boats
brought in.

OAK Marks 85th
Anniversary, Celebrating Birds
of Paradise, Then and Now
|
|
|
OAK is celebrating 85
years of flight this summer and the importance of service to the
Hawaiian Islands, both then and now. The first transpacific crossing
by air, from OAK to Oahu, was on June 29, 1927. The Bird of Paradise,
flown by Lieutenants Hegenberger and Maitland, took 25 hours, 30
minutes. Today, that same flight takes just 5 hours on our six
daily "Birds of Paradise," on Hawaiian
Airlines and Alaska
Airlines, to four Hawaiian
Islands.
Both Hawaiian and Alaska
are offering attractive, end-of-summer fares as low as $400
roundtrip to paradise. Bay Area travelers are responding favorably
to the 1,000-plus daily seats to the Hawaiian Islands from the OAK
gateway, which offers easy airport access, excellent customer
service, and on time flights.

New
and Improved Wi-Fi for OAK Travelers
Faster
Speeds, More Options, Still Free
|
|
|
OAK has partnered with Advanced
Wireless Group (AWG), the largest
provider of free airport Wi-Fi services. OAK knows that every
traveler has varying Wi-Fi needs, and under AWG's hybrid service
model, customers have the option to choose between complimentary,
sponsored Wi-Fi sessions of 45 minutes in length after viewing a
30-second commercial, or selecting a premium speed, advertising-free
service for a nominal fee.
AWG's significant investment in Wi-Fi infrastructure at
OAK is critical to support the explosive growth of mobile devices and
the increasing use of video by those in transit. OAK and AWG have
teamed up, and are prepared to support future Wi-Fi demand and
continued excellent connectivity for travelers.

Fun
|
|
Summer is all about
relaxing and enjoying with family and friends. There's no better
way to have some fun than an easy trip through OAK. The airport's
summer campaign reminds Bay Area residents of this through
prominent billboard ads that are strategically placed around the
East Bay.
Ads are located along
the Bay Area's heavily-trafficked freeways, in downtown Oakland,
and in the airport area. These simple, effective and persuasive
messages target motorists, encouraging them to choose OAK for its
many destinations to fun this summer.

Flint traveled to Washington, DC, in June to join the first meeting
of the Aviation Consumer Protection Committee, created to advise
the Department of Transportation (DOT) on protecting and
strengthening the rights of consumers when they fly.

of OAK, is part of the newly-formed, four-person committee to

BART Oakland Airport Connector at Halfway Mark
On
Track for Spring 2014 Opening
|
|
BART and Port of Oakland staff
recently updated the community on a major milestone on the BART
Oakland Airport Connector. Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) has reached
the halfway point in constructing train-to-plane service for OAK, and
girders placement between columns is highly visible and shows the
trackbed along airport area roadways. What's more, the project is
on-time, and on-budget.
This press
report describes the very big deal that
BART's Oakland Airport Connector is, as it creates more jobs, tourism
and economic investment for the East Bay Area.
